‘Tis the season for work Christmas parties

We are now entering the work Christmas party season and, if you’re planning an event with your Team, here’s a reminder of what employers needs to be thinking about.

We all want our work’s Christmas party to be a safe space and enjoyed by all, right?

Did you know it’s your business’ legal responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in your workplace or at any work event?

The Worker Protection Act means all employers have a statutory duty to take ‘reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment’, to improve safeguarding measures and to protect their team.

Sexual harassment includes unwelcome advances, inappropriate comments, or any behaviour that makes others feel uncomfortable.

Our advice, therefore, is before your work party make sure you:

🟢 Complete a risk assessment

🟢 Communicate clearly to everyone in your team your expectations relating to their professional conduct, alcohol consumption and respectful interactions at the event

🟢 Make it very clear you will not tolerate any form of harassment or any behaviour that makes others feel uncomfortable and any complaints raised will be taken seriously.

🟢 Excessive drinking can lead to inappropriate behaviour, which should not be tolerated. If alcohol is involved in your party plans you should also make sure those drinking do not drive and arrange alternative transportation.

All of Mint HR’s clients know all of this already, of course.

So, here’s to all your festive parties being memorable – for the right reasons only!

Merry Christmas, everyone!
